Another Rapper Shot...
Are you paying attention? This statement is intended to make you focus on the state of our hip hop culture. Hip Hop is Dead? We have allowed Corporate America to dictate to us what we listen to and we buy what they show us on T.V. Is this a society built on freedom? Freedom of speech, freedom of artistic expression, freedom of association and freedom of choice .... are you FREELY exercising your right to do things? Have you read Steven King's novels? Is there a movement to stop him from writing?
Mainstream rappers are taking the heat for their rap lyrics but aren't they products of their environment? Aren't they writing about their experiences? Yes, some of these experiences are ugly to some people but isn't it their reality - their lives? Should they be ridiculed for society's failure to provide for ALL its citizens? Think for yourself - is it the messenger? Is it the message? Who is it really? Think about it for a second?
On the other hand, you have rappers like Immortal Technique, Chuck D, Krs-One, Jair Dynast, Nas, Talib Kweli and others that are featured on this website who are talking about another side of hip hop - their side, their experiences, their reality but who's bringing attention to these rappers? Even with prominent broadcaster Don Imus' outburst and CNN's coverage of it, no one has looked to present the opposite side of the coin. It's talked about as if Rap and Hip-Hop are one-dimensional - we are not a one-dimensional people but we are indeed ONE!
So lift up your voice and be heard - be a leader, a trendsetter and let them know that you will not suffer in silence. Do your OWN RESEARCH and BUY ONLY what YOU want.
